Self-publishing without a company is kind of like casual dating. You’re testing the waters, having fun, keeping things light.
But at some point, you have to ask yourself:
Am I in this for the long haul?
Because once your books start making money, “casual” won’t cut it anymore. You need commitment. You need protection (financially—not the other kind 😆). You need an actual publishing company behind your name.
Here’s why:
Tax benefits—You could save thousands by setting up the right business structure. (I did!)
Legal protection—If something goes wrong (lawsuits happen!), your personal assets won’t be at risk.
Credibility—Nothing screams “I’m serious about this” like seeing your own publishing imprint instead beside “Publisher” on your listing (instead of “Independently Published.”)
Growth potential—Want to publish other authors? Expand your brand? Two KDP accounts? You’ll need a real business.
In my latest video, How to Start a Publishing Company (WHEN and WHY You Should), I break down exactly:
- Who should go all in and start a legit company (not everyone should)
- Why it’s crucial for those specific people (the benefits are huge)
- When it’s time to make things official (when to do it is as just as important as who should do it)
No pressure to “put a ring on it” just yet—but if you’re making money from your books, it might be time to stop playing the field.
