When performing keyword research we always aim to find low-competition keywords so our books can break through the clutter and get seen by more eyeballs in the Amazon store.
But how exactly can you tell whether or not a keyword is low-competition or high competition?
While there are other factors to consider (such as how many 5-star reviews the competitors ranking for that keyword have), in general I know that a keyword is low-competition if it has a:
- High search volume
- Low number of search results in the Amazon store
So, what are the magic numbers? What’s too low for search volume, and what’s too high for search results?
Unfortunately, there is no magic number here; but for me, I attempt to find keywords that have:
- A monthly search volume of at least 1,000
- Less than 2,000 search results
Let me be clear: this is not easy. And it’s not always even possible.
Those parameters are ideal, but if I can find 1 or 2 keywords that come as close to meeting those parameters as possible, then I go for it. Those will be my star keywords—the ones that I use in my Title information—and the rest of my keywords can be more competitive.
So, what do I mean by “more competitive”? Well, I still at least want all of my keywords to have a monthly search volume of at least about 1,000 (or slightly less), but I’m willing to use keywords that have a higher number of search results—5,000+.
If I can generate at least 1-2 low-competition keywords, the rest can be higher competition.
But how do I determine the monthly search volume to begin with?
I personally use Publisher Rocket because it not only shows me the search results and search volume of keywords I’m testing, but also shows me all of the related keywords and average earnings of the books ranking for that keyword. And it does it all with the click of a button, so I don’t have to spend hours doing my keyword research manually.
Let’s take a look now at how I use Publisher Rocket to decide amongst three different keywords that I’m thinking about using for my book.
