If you’re a coach, content creator, or author, creating a branded prompted journal can be a GREAT way to kick your audience growth up a notch (or ten!) and introduce another income stream into your business.
However, the cost to create a branded prompted journal can stop a lot of people dead in their tracks. I’m sure you can imagine how much money you’ll have to plunk down for things like:
❌ printing
❌ warehousing
❌ shipping
❌ customer service
These costs can be ENORMOUS, before even factoring in the value of your time (handling all of these things can be a huge time-suck!).
Luckily, there’s a free and relatively simple way to create your own branded prompted journal using the Kindle Direct Publishing Platform (KDP). Phew!
In this step-by-step tutorial, you’ll learn how to:
✅ define your journal concept (before you start designing)
✅ decide what to include in your journal
✅ create a cover file for your journal
✅ create the interior pages of your journal
I’ll also discuss some instances in which you may want to forego using KDP’s print-on-demand service and opt for a more traditional publisher instead.

Why Self-Publish on Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP)?
Publishing a branded journal on KDP is a relatively simple process. All you need to do is:
- create an interior file and a cover file
- upload them to your KDP bookshelf
…and your book will be available for sale on Amazon within 72 hours. When a customer orders your book, KDP will print a copy and send it to the customer. That’s it!
Why Create a Branded Prompted Journal?
Branded prompted journals are great low-content book offerings that can go hand and hand with any of your existing content, frameworks, digital courses, or coaching methodologies. Creating one is a relatively simple and inexpensive way to add value to your audience and provide another income stream for your business.
Keep in mind that you’re not limited to a journal. You could create a planner, workbook, activity book, log book, coloring book—whatever will resonate the most with your audience.

Steps to Creating Your Own Journal To Sell on KDP
Be sure to check out my step-by-step video tutorial for creating a branded journal to sell on Amazon KDP, where I’ll show you how to:
- define your concept
- write your content
- choose your design software (I use Affinity for this tutorial)
- design your interior file
- design your cover file
When to Go the Traditional Publishing Route
There are instances where you might want to forego publishing your book through KDP’s print on demand platform and go through a more traditional printer instead. For example:
- you want to create a more high-end product
- you want options that aren’t currently available through KDP, such as coil or leather binding, gold leaf, or other embellishments
- you already have a decent-sized audience and you’re fairly certain they’ll buy your book. This can mitigate the risk of investing a large chunk of time and money into finding a printer and then having your books printed, stored, and shipped.
However, if you’re looking for a way to grow your audience, boost your authority, and add an additional stream of income into the mix without huge commitments of time and money, KDP is the perfect solution.
